Stone Bodhisattva

Unblinking, unmoving, sits the old gray stone
It lies in the empty field where no one passes by,
Moon and sun blister it, the rain pours down.

Bodhisattva of Great Compassion sitting alone,
You are not waiting, not weeping, under a blue sky
Old stone, gray stone, no king gives you crown,
But you are upholding the stars and trees and fields.
Unknown to you, O stone, is the passing of days;
O Great Compassionate One in whom no desires burn,
You say nothing, you are silent, you do not yield,
Bountiful One who does not know or leave or stay,
Bodhisattva of Stone who does not come or go or learn.
Round you flow and rise and sink the bitter mortal years;
Stone of Compassion, weep unhindered these immortal tears.
